Now, in Part 3, let’s discuss vegetarianism. Yes, one year ago I started a blog, began meditating and became a vegetarian, literally over the same weekend. There was no life-altering event that triggered these changes. It was fairly spontaneous. But there was an Aha! moment.
Why Did I Become A Vegetarian?
Hard at work one day, my coworkers and I picked up the faint, sweet scent of BBQ. When it didn’t go away, we got curious and went to the windows. A catering company specializing in BBQ had set up in the parking lot below and was grilling chicken. I made a comment to a worker. I honestly do not even remember what it was. But, she replied, “Oh, are you a vegetarian?” And my answer was, “I wish.” Shortly thereafter, I realized that my actions did not align with my life philosophies. So, on a whim, really, I took action and have never really looked back!
There was no precedence in my upbringing for vegetarianism. We certainly ate meat growing up. In fact, my father’s family is from Nebraska… some serious meat and potato types. A good steak on the grill (with a side of potatoes… mashed or baked…and a veggie) was the preferred dish in the summer.
Was It Difficult to Go Vegetarian?
Not at all. While I cannot speak for others, for me, it was very easy. I already knew it was something that aligned with my personal values.
It really was as if I flipped a switch to ‘vegetarian’ mode and life went on. Look up some recipes on Pinterest, create a folder and voila! Granted, we have long been very good about eating healthy, whole foods. Hint from Michael Pollan: Shop only from the edges of the grocery store and, ideally, only buy foods that don’t come with a box, packaging, colorful labels, health claims, etc. In hindsight, maybe vegetarianism was more of an evolution for me than a switch.
What Have I Learned?
Just as with my blog and with meditation, on a whim, I decided to stop thinking and start doing.
I had been curious about these things and they clearly aligned with my life philosophies, but I was stuck in a discovery phase. Probably, I was making excuses as to why I couldn’t be a vegetarian. Where would I get my protein? Would I suffer headaches? How difficult would it be to plan and cook meals? I can tell you with absolute certainty that all the worry was for naught.
